My ports are still openso will try closing or changing them next. The web itnerface is responding very slowly.

Using a SSH connection with the top command it is clear that the load goes up all the time when the web interface is up. What are all those "system processes" in resource monitor? Worked with tech support to quit virtually every process. Please fix, Qnap. The reason qnap support could not really fix it is that the guilty processes constantly hop around. Then it drops and manarequest.

Support said that Qmail should not be the problem, but could not locate the issue otherwise. Different firmware etc does not really matter. The thing to watch is mariadb. What always helps for me is to restart mariadb. Still not sure why it happens sure I use a lot of stuff. For sure I know Plex was one of the apps causing it for quite some times I am not using that anymore.

Still I have this problem one a while. My suspect is in backup stuff but not sure off that neither do I have evidence of this at the moment.

Never the less it is annoying this problems is there for a long time allready and should be addressed by Qnap. Noticed on the dashboard I had an background indexing task running. When I stopped that, the CPU reduced and the mysqld process went down to a normal level. It only takes a minute to sign up. It just stucks and refuses to do anything. I tried to kill all processes with high cpu usage but when I opened some file it stucks again one or more smbd processes with very high cpu usage. The only thing that works is to reboot NAS and then it works for another week or two. The related issue is dedicated to linux 2. In case the above mentioned io perf.

Would be good to know if your issue is same as root cause as the reported kernel issue is not fully understood - thus there are many other threads in the qnap forum that report similar behaviour. Newer kernels do not have this issue any more. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top.

Only one complained of access denied and the rest just complained about the speed. I would make sure the FW is up to date, a new one came out recently for Qnap devices, not sure if yours is one of the models it supports, secondly I would disable any services you no longer use, such as iSCSI.

We had to reconnect AD before and as a result it lost all permissions on all shares and we had to re-do themdon't want to go there again :S. Just an update : we just upgraded the fw to the latest version. Seems OK so far I will update tomorrow.

Hey Rod-IT thanks for the quick reply. Domain joined : Yes All other services no. Quick links. What is NAS doing constantly?! Post Reply. It's always busy with some work. CPU usage is about 40 constantly. I have not so many apps on it. Just standard Stations app and Plex Media Server. I understand that Plex can index media.

But I disabled scheduled indexing and currently I'm sure it's not indexing anything can be checked on Status page. I rebooted the NAS. On start it run Indexing media despite the fact it's disabled! I pressed "Pause" to pause thumbnail generation. It changed nothing - it continues doing something I can hear how it torments HDDs. Why does this piece of You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Without backups on a different system preferably placed at another siteyou will eventually lose data! These are used by glibc iconv implementation. It works similar to the standard UNIX dbm routines.

Successfully terminated. No joy unfortunately, after 30mins I gave up. Removed that plugins folder, then started it up again, and it seems the Plugins directory automatically appears again? Would really love to get this working, so if there is anything else i can try please let me know :. Uninstall the full package of Plex.

Then i'll install the package again on a clean start with no Python anywhere. A sym. Same issue. It is fully initialised, no activity in log but the plex process is consuming all the CPU. Sadly, no more bullets here, so unless somebody else kicks in, I'm afraid you are on your own, as much as I hate this.

How to solve kernel_task high CPU usage?

No worries. Thanks for the help anyway. I'll leave it going overnight, then uninstall tomorrow if its still the same. First I thought because I enabled the indexer but when I switched off the automatic indexing and reboot which should stop any analyzing going on the problem still persisted.

I switched the package on and off so often that I actually managed to break it and Plex is not starting anymore. Antivirus is disabled never enabledi've disabled most qpkgs and webserver, and as much other things as i can spot.

Except Java, not sure if that would clash. Its been 24 hours, and it still sits there, is a 1. Nothing appears to be happening in the logs. I'm trying to get it up and running so I can use PlexConnect, I've only been using Serviio so far, but I want to go via the apple tv 3. If anyone has any clues into how or if its even possible on a pro it'd be much appreciated. I've just completely uninstalled, and rebooted and reinstalled again.

Its on I haven't gone to the first configure webpage at all yet, this is only after install. Try and stop Plex, if possible. I haven't gone to the setup page yet, i'm waiting and watching the CPU usage. Will leave it a few more hours, but it still looks to be stuck at Sadly, almost clueless here : Only other thing I can think of, are the errors in the log for all the python stuff. Good things to try, thanks. Should I always delete the plugin dir? Are they simply 'traps' on the Qnap?

Ah, brilliant, thank you for the explanation, much appreciated!By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service. Server Fault is a question and answer site for system and network administrators. It only takes a minute to sign up. Thus, the CPU is never under greater stress than my scripts know it can handle. Now, my server undergoes max capacity production in time blocks up to 3 hours long at a time. Much of the time the work goes smoothly, but in the middle of this period, often the CPU system load increases dramatically.

I have read that this indicates the kernel is struggling with queued tasks, which occurs under overwhelming system load. This kernel usage of CPU dramatically slows production and only prolongs the queued tasks. The weird part is that, after about 30 minutes, the system load will disappear, with the kernel processes decreasing back to zero CPU usage, only to begin hogging the CPU again later. During this entire time, the amount of work being fed to the CPUs has not changed, and is usually handled just fine.

However, when these kernel processes kick in, it completely kills production. Here is the output of "top -u root" during one of these events. However, there is no iowait, and the system load average is 22 out of 24 coreswhich is normal.

Are there any potential explanations for the behavior of these processes when CPU load is strictly regulated to be manageable? In searching the web, everyone blames overwhelming system load, but my server's behavior does not suggest that the used resources should cause this lock-up.

The server's cache settings had somehow been reset without my knowledge, setting swappiness to After setting swappiness to 1, I have not come across the same hang-ups from the kernel processes, and sar -W shows near-zero values at all times. In summary, it appears that aggressive swapping during high load with large memory transfers was bogging down the system during times of large and rapidly changing demand for resources.

So, for some reason your Linux scheduler decides that processes need moving to another CPU, and the migration process eats the CPU time. You could try pinning processes to specific CPUs, or try different schedulers with your kernel. Maybe some other scheduler isn't so eager in migrating processes to other CPUs. I've tracked issues with migration kernel process reported here.
